Stephen C. Shank, 39, was arrested on various charges, including false imprisonment, following a 4-hour standoff with police at a Daytona Beach apartment complex.
According to a release, the Daytona Beach Police Department responded to a call at a residence Wednesday evening at the Cape Morris Cove Apartments on the corner of Big Tree Road and Clyde Morris Boulevard in Daytona Beach. Volusia County dispatchers received a call for help from a woman claiming that Shank had a mental episode inside the apartment, accusing her of controlling his television and cell phone.
When police arrived on the scene, dispatchers advised the woman to walk out of the apartment, but Shank threatened to harm her if she attempted to leave. Furthermore, Shank got agitated after he spotted first responders waiting outside the apartment building, claiming he would gun them down and set off a bomb.
A Hostage Negotiation Team with the Police Department arrived on the scene and spoke to Shank for several hours before the decision came to have the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit force entry into the apartment after repeatedly refusing to surrender peacefully. The SWAT team entered the apartment around 11:30 p.m., taking Shank into custody.
Shank is held with no bond at the Volusia County Branch Jail and charged with a felony count of false imprisonment and misdemeanor charges of assault on a person 65 years of age or older and resisting an officer.
