The Daytona Beach Police Department responded to an overnight call at a 7-11 off Ridgewood Avenue in Daytona Beach regarding a stabbing. When officers arrived on the scene, the victim, Rickey Shelhorse, 34, was found lying in the roadway covered in blood

Officers requested medical assistance from the Daytona Beach Fire Department, but Shelhorse succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene at 1:50 a.m.

According to police reports, video surveillance footage from the 7-11 showed Shelhorse standing next to his 2011 Chevrolet pickup truck when the suspect, identified as Durian Atwaters, 38, walked up to Shelhorse, starting an argument between the two. The video footage captures Atwaters stabbing Shelhorse in the chest before fleeing the scene down South Ridgewood Ave.

Atwaters was also observed on the scene earlier in the evening, on video in the store wearing blue gym shorts and a large shark tooth necklace. The store clerk told officers that he did not know the suspect's name but confirmed he was a regular to the store. After canvassing the local hotels, the front desk clerk at the Relax Inn, 1225 S. Ridgewood Ave, Daytona Beach, told officers a man who fit Atwater's description was on the property. Police found Atwaters wearing the blue gym shorts and shark tooth necklace in a hotel room with a woman who happened to have dated Shelhorse for approximately ten months.

Officers took Atwaters into custody without incident, and cooperated with police, by taking officers to the spot where he hid the folding knife, used to stab Shelhorse. Atwaters is charged with second-degree murder and will be taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail, where he will await his court appearance.
