Utility crews will be on the Daytona Beach beachside in neighborhoods and commercial areas to “smoke test” the sewer lines, beginning today, April 4, running through April 29, 2022.
According to a release, smoke testing is a conventional and efficient testing method that assists in identifying defects such as cracks, leaks, or faulty connections in the sanitary sewer collection system, which allow rainwater to enter this underground pipe network. Since the sewer system handles sewage, additional rainwater can cause system problems.
USSI crews, the utility contractor who will be "smoke testing" the pipes, will be in easily recognizable uniforms. Workers will blow a dense white smoke into the sewer system from the street and monitor where the smoke escapes, quickly revealing any cracks or breaks in pipes. The smoke is odorless, non-toxic, and non-staining. The smoke dissipates quickly and will not cause harm to pets or plants, nor will it leave a residue.
For example, if smoke permeates up through a yard, it indicates a break in the sewer line at that location. Smoke should only enter homes or businesses if a property’s traps are dry or defective or if there are uncapped or broken drainpipes.
City officials sent out notifications to residents in the area of the smoke testing via informational door hangers, and anyone with questions can call (888) 645-9570 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
