Furry Friends Honored as Special Guests at Volusia County Government’s Daily Briefing Press Conference.

The Volusia County Government held its daily briefing press conference today, with a few special guests at the Emergency Operations Center this afternoon. Kevin Captain, Interim Director of Community Information, stated county government took a new approach to bring a little light-heartedness and fun to the end of this week’s briefings.

The County plans to continue their use of the 14 open vehicular access ramps for parking, as we go into the weekend, but revealed that their new goal is to open more parking by Memorial Day Weekend.

While ramps will be open this weekend tide permitting, officials want to remind residents that there is a low-pressure system out towards the Bahamas that has the potential to turn into this season’s first Tropical Storm, provide rough surf, and dangerous rip currents.

Both Ray Manchester, Director of Beach Safety, and Jim Judge, Director of Emergency Management, in the county urge beachgoers to swim only if they are by a manned lifeguard tower.

Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center will be open Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday next week from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., as a free COVID-19 testing site.

Sheriff Chitwood wanted to remind everyone that there will be a large law enforcement presence on and around Disappearing Island, and remind citizens to social distance, and not operate a boat while consuming alcohol. The Sheriff also wanted to inform everyone today kicks-off Law Enforcement Week, and asked residents “If you see an officer give them a thumbs up, a wave, or a thank you.”

With the support of Volusia County Humane Society and Animal Services Division Director, Adam Leath is encouraging residents to ensure they include their pets into their family's safety plan for both the COVID-19 Pandemic and Hurricane Planning. “Pets are a commitment, and a part of the family, and should be included in any emergency plan,” he said.

Kevin Captain, Sheriff Chitwood, and other County Officials provided their updates with kittens, and puppies that are available for foster or adoption through the different Humane Societies throughout the county.
