Ponce Inlet Police Department participating in Drive High, Get a DUI

In a joint effort to keep the roads safe this holiday season, the Ponce Inlet Police Department, in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), will launch the Drive High, Get a DUI impaired driving awareness campaign.

Running from December 15, 2023, through January 1, 2024, this initiative aims to curb the dangers of driving under the influence of illegal substances, along with over-the-counter and prescription medications that may have impairing effects.

Law enforcement officers nationwide are joining forces to ensure the safety of communities during the festive period. Chief Jeff Glazier emphasized the importance of understanding that impaired driving, whether due to drugs or alcohol, is both illegal and life-threatening. "We cannot overstate the importance of abstaining from driving after using drugs or alcohol," Chief Glazier remarked. "During this high-visibility period, we will monitor drivers while enforcing impaired-driving laws."

The campaign highlights the misconception that being high will not impact driving abilities. However, scientific evidence reveals that marijuana can slow reaction times, impair cognitive performance, and make it challenging for drivers to maintain a steady position in their lane.

For individuals finding themselves drug-impaired with a vehicle, the campaign suggests giving keys to a sober driver who can safely transport them home. Friends are encouraged to intervene and prevent impaired driving by taking away the keys and ensuring a safe journey home. The emphasis is on saving lives, even if it means potentially offending someone.

Various alternatives are available to help incapacitated drivers reach home safely, including designating a sober driver, calling a taxi, or using a rideshare service. If you notice an impaired driver on the road, call 911.
