Two-term Port Orange Mayor, Don Burnette, has officially declared his candidacy for the position of Volusia County Chair. With a deep-rooted connection to the region, Burnette aims to bring positive change and foster unity among the cities within Volusia County.

Having spent his entire life as a Volusia County resident, Burnette has witnessed numerous transformations, some for the better and others not as favorable. Recognizing the dedicated individuals already serving in various elected positions throughout Volusia County, Burnette believes that collaboration and solidarity among the cities and county are crucial for overall progress.

Burnette's political journey began in 2010 when he joined the Port Orange City Council. Subsequently, in 2016, he assumed the role of Mayor following the term limit of his predecessor, Allen Green. Burnette secured re-election in 2020, a testament to his dedication and service to the community.

"We need leadership that can bring people together, not perpetuate a culture of sparring to continue," expressed Burnette, emphasizing the importance of unifying Volusia County. He remains committed to fostering meaningful connections with residents across the county and engaging in discussions about the future of Volusia.

The decision to run for Volusia County Chair was not taken lightly, and after extensive deliberation with his family, friends, and local leaders, he concluded that this challenge was worthy of pursuit. Burnette expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received thus far and conveyed his eagerness to outline his vision for the Volusia County community in the upcoming year.

Equipped with a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Central Florida, Burnette possesses a strong educational foundation. Moreover, his involvement as a long-time community volunteer in Volusia County Schools and his role on the local Salvation Army Advisory Board since 2004, where he chairs the finance committee, demonstrate his deep commitment to the region.

Burnette's leadership extends beyond the city of Port Orange. He served two terms as President of the Volusia League of Cities and currently holds a position on the Florida League of Cities Board of Directors. Recently, he was named "Homerule Hero" by the league for advocating for cities to work together with our legislators to better our Florida communities.

Volusia County residents can anticipate further details about Burnette’s plans and vision for the county in the coming months.
