Volunteers are needed for a July 5 beach clean-up.

Volusia County officials are predicting another massive accumulation of fireworks, plastics, and other litter on County beaches following this upcoming weekend’s Fourth of July festivities. To help with beach clean-up efforts, Volusia County is looking for volunteers to help with their efforts.

According to a release, every year, beaches are littered with thousands of pounds of spent fireworks, food, plates, cups, cigarettes, broken beach chairs, plastic bags, six-pack rings, and straws left by Independence Day revelers.

Environmental specialists with the County are asking volunteers to join them in removing debris on the morning of July 5. They are coordinating clean-ups from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at three sites:

• Tom Renick Park, 1565 Ocean Shore Blvd., Ormond Beach
• Sun Splash Park, 611 S. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach
• Mary McLeod Bethune Beach Park, 6656 S. Atlantic Ave.

County staff encourages residents and visitors to go to their favorite stretch of the beach with a trash bag or bucket. Once bags are ready to be thrown away, they can be put in any garbage can on the beach or placed next to it if the can is full.

Staff with Volusia County’s Beach Safety Division and a contracted clean-up company will be participating in the beach clean-up to make County’s beaches clean and safe for sea turtles, birds, and other wildlife.
