Volusia County is seeking recruits for its Citizen Academy.

Volusia County is accepting applications for its Citizens Academy, a free program designed to educate citizens about County government operations. Classes will meet in a mixture of in-person and online sessions, with field trips to Volusia County facilities, including the Marine Science Center, DeBary Hall Historic Site, Emergency Operations Center, Tomoka Landfill, and the Fire Rescue Training Center.

According to a release, topics will include growth management, community services, public protection, public works, and budgets. Elected officials and staff will also cover the challenges and issues facing Volusia County. Participants must be residents of Volusia County and at least 21 years old. Basic knowledge of computers is helpful as class materials will be online, and class correspondence will be via email.

Classes will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays for 12 weeks beginning Thursday, September 22. Class size is limited, and applications must be submitted by Monday, September 12. Those interested in attending can find applications online, at www.volusia.org/citizensacademy.
