Jordan Carty, a 24-year-old Bethune-Cookman University student, is in police custody after firing a gunshot just before 1 p.m. on Friday, February 24, 2023, in a dorm building on McLeod Avenue in Daytona Beach.
According to a release, school security received reports of shots fired inside of a building on campus, and attempted to contact Carty at 12:47 p.m., but he refused to allow security access to the room. While attempting to leave, Carty concealed the firearm inside his clothing before falling down the stairs, allowing security officers to take possession of the gun and detain the suspect. Security officers notified the Daytona Beach Police Department at 1:03 p.m. of the incident.
While Police Officers were en route, security verified there were no injuries, and the suspect and firearm were in BCU Security Officers' custody. Following further investigation, police officers found that Carty had possession of an additional gun and that there were multiple gunshots to one of the walls inside the dorm room, which appeared to have occurred over a long period of time.
Carty faces charges of possession of a firearm on school grounds.
