The Daytona Beach Police Department has identified the suspect responsible for the attempted child abduction in Daytona Beach on Sunday as Salimah McCann. Contrary to initial assumptions, the Daytona Beach Police Department has revealed that McCann was not attempting to kidnap the child.
"This incident has nothing to do with human trafficking and is rather a case of an individual dealing with mental illness," said Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young during a press conference held on Wednesday.
According to Chief Young, McCann revealed that her actions were driven by depression on Mother's Day, as she no longer has custody of her child. McCann told police she felt "jealousy" and "anger" seeing the little girl and her mother together, leading her to attempt to separate them.
McCann is a military veteran with a documented history of mental illness and criminal charges. She is in custody at the Volusia County Branch Jail with no bond following her arrest Monday for an unrelated incident.
